Stylish Backpacking

Travelling the world or living abroad for a year, can be one of the most life changing events that ever takes place. If you went to university then you’ll know the changes that happened and how independent you became in just 1 year! No longer does mum wash your clothes or dirty clothing. No longer does dad give you lifts to town or slip you a £20 to pay for petrol. Those days are long gone.

However, there is one constant that remains with you during this changeover. What you wear, and your interpretation of what is ‘cool’ is ever changing but the fact reminds you still want to be accepted by your friends as a looking good. It is in fact what you wear that changes how other perceive you to be.

With this in mind, how do you dress and why? Is it to make a good impression? Does what you wear influence how you feel? Or are you wearing a batman t-shirt because you’ve just put a wash on and have no other clothes to wear?

Having finished uni, you decide to go travelling. Only now your wardrobe is a 70L backpack. So the question is what goes in and what stays behind. Forget the batman t-shirt, you’re not 18 anymore! Unlike many who opt for 2 tees, a pair of shorts, flip flops and 1 jumper, many still want to look good when they’re travelling.

So below we have comprised 10 essential items you should take to look good and gentlemanly, not boyish.

1. Dark Denim Jeans: No matter the weather, a good pair of jeans are the most versatile item in your ‘wardrobe’. With a shirt, t-shirt, jumper, vest, flip flops, boots, shoes, the options are endless. So invest well in a good pair £100 plus. The better the make the longer they’ll stay looking good. £30 for 6 months or £100 for 2 years!

2. Shorts: Unless you’re travelling to the arctic for 8 months, make sure you have a good pair of dark coloured shorts (Your bottom half should always be darker than your top). You can wear them to the beach, around town or even in restaurants on warmer evenings.

3.Smart trainers: Like before, spend a little more on a good make that go well with the jeans and shorts. White or brown will work best, not orange or red. How many millionaires do you know wear red vans! Those days are over. By all means wear skate shoes but make sure they are versatile colour.

4. Sweater: No not a hoodie (although if you have room take one) a sweater is slightly more formal and can be used to wear to restaurants, a hoodie however, is not acceptable for the modern man.

5. Plain white t-shirt: You can wear a white t-shirt with just about anything, including all of the above!

6. Dress shirt: Can be used for nights out or with jeans and smart trainers to most hospitality interviews (preferably wash before the interview as you don’t want them knowing what you drank the night before.

7. Underwear: Not 5 pairs! 7! There are 7 days in the week change everyday, nobody likes the smelly guy! (Space Saver- stuff underwear into shoes as it keep the shape of the shoe and saves space.

8. Sunglasses: Get a decent pair, after all you want to look your best. Don’t, however, spend £300 on new Ray Bans, they will inevitably get stolen, lost or smashed. £50 is good enough. Any use contemporary colours, black, brown, blue or dark red and green. Okay white is fine too if you have to!

9. Flip Flops: Very much about personality but think about what you might wear them with. A good pair of thongs should be wearable with shorts and jeans for a contemporary look.

10. Swim Shorts: NOT SPEEDO!!! you know what speedo rhymes with….? Exactly and that’s what you’ll look like! Similarly, don’t don the floral shorts, they’re not exotic, they’re what your dad wears. Instead go for block colours or board shorts. Check out quicksilver.

And there you have it, 10 essential items to take travelling. The rest just depends on what you can fit in. Happy travelling!
